Joy Hertz began as a daydream – an idea sparked by Project Semicolon, and our own personal experiences with the challenge of surviving ourselves. That dream has grown into a grounded, intentional effort to create a nonprofit body modification studio and community programming space, both of which serve as a haven for healing and connection. We’re currently in the research and development phase and are walking with care toward opening our doors to the Denver community in 2026.
Mission
Joy Hertz exists to support individuals navigating the impacts of self-injury and suicide. Through peer connection and community support, we hold space for healing. We fund our work through accessible body modification services, creating a brave space where agency, expression, and compassion intersect.
Operating Model
Joy Hertz will operate with multiple heartbeats through a community center that offers three types of programming:
- Peer-led Brave Spaces Meetings Focused on Group Support,
- Locally-led Self-Expression Creativity, Mindfulness, and Movement Gatherings, and
- Trauma-informed Bodily Agency Sessions that Provide flash tattoos and body piercings in a professional and safe environment.
